Lithium Reserve Batteries Print

Thales Cryogenics has in 2007 taken over the lithium battery activities of market leader Thales Munitronics. These reserve type batteries, are being produced for military Proximity Fuze and Small Missile applications and have proven to be very reliable. In this type of batteries, the electrolyte is retained in a separate ampule and the battery is not active. This means it can be stored over very long periods without any deterioration. Even after 10 years of storage the batteries have shown excellent operational behavior. The activation of the battery is achieved by shattering the ampule during the acceleration of the fuze or missile. Typical voltage and current levels of the standard product portfolio range from 18 to 28 Vdc applications with currents up to 250mA. The principle of the stacked lithium battery allows for easy scaling to higher voltages and current levels.

Answering to the evolution on the battery market towards smaller, more efficient electronics requiring less energy, Thales is developing smaller, compact batteries. The design goals are minimized dimensions of 10 x 13 mm (smallest current dimensions 23 x 32 mm) delivering 9V under high spin conditions (up to 100.000 rpm) and high acceleration forces (up to 50.000 G)
